DRUG TREATMENT

Antacids

Calcium carbonate tablets (Tums, many others), magnesium and aluminum hydroxide (Maalox, Mylanta, Gaviscon, others). Function: neutralize excess stomach acid for a short period of time. Side effects: possible rebound acid, meaning the stomach produces more acid when the treatment is discontinued.

Histamine-2 Receptor Antagonists

Cimetidine (Tagamet), ranitidine (Zantac), nizatidine (Axid), famotidine (Pepcid). Function: block the receptor for histamine in the stomach to reduce the secretion of acid. Side effects with long-term use: headache, muscle aches, rashes, mental disorientation.

Proton Pump Inhibitors

Lanosoprazole (Prevacid), omeprazole (Prilosec). Function: affect cells in the stomach wall to dramatically reduce production of acid. Side effects: because these drugs are usually prescribed for a few month’s duration, long-term effects are unknown.

Promotility Agents

Cisapride (Propulsid), metoclopramide (Reglan). Function: improve tone of the lower esophageal sphincter and enhance downward contraction of smooth muscles in the esophagus and stomach. Cisapride side effects: diarrhea. Metoclopramide side effects: depression and anxiety.
