Giving Feedback

I don’t think it’s an exaggeration to state that all hosts will need to give feedback to a student at some point. While many students will understand and accept your comments, knowing you’re trying to guide them to a more satisfying, successful experience, some will misunderstand such feedback, and may resent or reject it outright. Giving feedback is hard, even when you’re from the same culture as the other person. Understanding a few key cultural differences in communication can make you more effective when it’s time to correct a student’s behaviour.

Here, I’ll highlight three factors to consider: how direct to be, how to frame the feedback (i.e., using feedback “sandwiches”), and what vocabulary to use. Any or all of these three communication dynamics can lead someone to misinterpret the strength of the feedback, how much effort they should put toward the problem, and how quickly they should take corrective action. As Laroche told me, “It’s easy for people to either under- or overestimate how big of an issue the behaviour is. If you underestimate, you don’t take enough action, or not soon enough, and that drives the other person crazy.” Does this sound familiar?
