Mr. MacPherson stared at the rows of keys on the wall in his office. A cabinet, he decided. A cabinet with small pigeonholes for each set of keys. Four rows high, and a lid that can swing down and be padlocked. He’d have to get a carpenter to make it, but that shouldn’t be a problem.

Carpenter, he thought. Something about a carpenter.

There was a light knock on the door. He turned to see Mrs. Bainbridge standing there.

“Hello,” he said. “Have you brought my postcards back?”

“Oddly enough, the police require them as evidence in a murder case,” she said.

“Murder? What have my postcards have to do with a murder?”

“It’s a long story,” she said. “But Miss Sparks and I would be glad to tell it to you. We would like to invite you to take tea with us tomorrow afternoon while we tell it. It would provide you with a break from the polishing the floor in four oh seven.”

“Could I bring Charlie?”

“Of course,” she replied. “And here’s some good news. We recovered the missing key.”

She came forward to hand it to him.

“How did you do that?” he asked.

“It’s all part of the story,” she said.

“I’m looking forward to hearing it,” he said.

“Have you given any further thought about applying to The Right Sort?” she asked.

“Well,” he began.

Carpenter, he thought.

“You know, there’s something I want to try first,” he said. “If it doesn’t work out, maybe I’ll fork out the five pounds.”

“That’s fine,” she said. “We’ll see you tomorrow at teatime.”

She left.

Carpenter, he thought. The girl he kissed in the carriage. Her name was Jenny Carpenter. Maybe he could find her again. Worth trying.

Jenny Carpenter.

Better write it down.
