Why might the menopause affect my B12 levels?

The hormonal fluctuations around the perimenopause and menopause are unlikely to directly deplete vitamin B12. However, it’s relatively common for women to experience digestive disturbances during this period, which could be a key contributory factor in depleting B12. For example, you may find that you’re more prone to IBS symptoms such as bloating, loose stools or constipation. Hormonal changes may also affect the optimal balance of beneficial bacteria in the gut, which could generally impair nutrient absorption.

Problems of indigestion or acid reflux also often emerge around the menopause, which may lead to the use of antacid medication. This could directly affect the absorption of vitamin B12 and is a common cause of depletion.

The body can store vitamin B12 for 2–5 years, so it may take some time for a dietary deficiency to show.
