So the Army chose a .45-caliber round. The final design and dimensions were the product of a joint effort by Browning, Colt, ammunition maker Union Metallic Cartridge, and the Army’s Frankford Arsenal in Philadelphia, which manufactured the first ammunition commonly referred to as “.45 ACP” for the “automatic Colt pistol.” Its lead bullet was almost twice the weight of the .38-caliber round and the powder behind it generated twice as much energy. Its effective range in a handgun—the distance it could be accurately aimed—was an optimistic 50 yards, though it would travel 1,650 yards before gravity and air resistance brought it to the ground. Various manufacturers designed pistols around the ammunition and in 1907 the Army began comparison tests with eight guns, including revised models from Colt and Luger and a new entry from Savage Arms in Utica, New York. Yet again, ordnance officers rejected all and declared no firearm had “reached such a stage of perfection as to justify its adoption.”13
