Chapter 9

Balthazar

Pulling up to the guardhouse of the gated community Alistair, Xander, and I lived in, I wave at Louie, the guard working the day shift. He returns the gesture before opening the gate for us to pass through. I had called twenty minutes before we arrived to let him know I was expecting visitors in a red Mustang and to let them enter, but no one else. My five bedroom, four-and-a-half-bathroom house sits on six and half acres and is located in Copper Canyon, Texas which is about fifty minutes from Dallas. Even though the community has front and back guardhouses and guards that patrolled the neighborhood, I had my house surrounded by a privacy fence. It was away from the other homeowners and I like it that way. While I loved being in the city, I loved my peace and quiet also.

“Wow, these houses are amazing,” Nina gushes, glued to the window like a little kid at one of those drive up petting zoos.

They are nice houses but me personally, I think mine looks better.

“They are,” I lie.

“How long have you lived here,” she asks.

“I bought the house after I moved here. Alistair and Xander own homes here too, although they stay more at the family condo’s downtown,” I reply.

“They must be crazy! If I had a house like one of these, I would be here all the time. Not even the long drive to and from work would keep me from my house.”

I stifle a laugh, because Nina was going to have to get used to that commute or me taking and picking her up from work. She’s stuck with me now, so the way I see it is we can do things two ways. One, we live at my house and two, when we were too tired to drive back to Cooper Canyon, we stay at hers. There will be no negotiating.

We make it to my security gate. After entering the code, we proceed. Nina gasps when she sees my two story home come into view. I wave at Brian as he and six other guards walked the perimeter of the gate.

“I take it back! Those other houses look like shacks compared to yours,” Nina praises.

“Thank you.”

As we get closer, I see the red Mustang parked in front of the house. Xander, Hendrix, and I park our vehicles in front of my four car garage. I get out first, then go around to open Nina’s door as the others exit the SUV’s. Hendrix opens GeeGee’s door, then helps her out.

The door of the Mustang flies open with a pissed off looking Janae getting out.

“Are you serious, Nina?! You couldn’t tell me you were with Balthazar,” she fumes approaching us.

The passenger door of the Mustang swings open, causing Alistair, Xander, and the men to pull their guns.

“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” Janae yells putting her hands up.

“Mike,” I question, staring at the tall heavily tattooed white man with shoulder length dark hair, and muscular build. He has his hand on the butt of the side piece strapped to his belt.
