Surprise Visitors
“Wait for me!” Bess shouted, running behind the other girls.
They were several feet ahead, trying to keep the young thief in sight, but lost him in a crowd of tourists now beginning their ascent. Nancy and George froze to a halt.
“Why did you stop?” Bess panted as she caught up to them.
“He disappeared,” Nancy explained.
“Besides,” George said, “I’m getting a blister under my heel.” She stooped to loosen the strap of her sandal.
“But what about my wallet?” her cousin exclaimed. She broke into tears. “That was all my money!”
“No, it wasn’t,” George reminded her. “You still have traveler’s checks in your suitcase, don’t you?”
“I suppose so,” Bess said, “but I just cashed one for fifty dollars and that kid took every cent!”
Nancy slipped an arm around Bess’s shoulder. “We’ll report it to the police,” she assured her.
“And if there’s anything else you need to buy,” George said, “I’ll give you the money.”
“You will?” Bess smiled appreciatively.
“We both will,” Nancy replied.
The girl dried her eyes with a tissue and followed her friends to the bottom of the hill. Almost immediately, they caught a taxi and went to the nearest police station, where Bess explained what had happened.
“I don’t know,” the captain said, shaking his head. “Your wallet may be lost forever. But we try to find boy. Tell me, was there American money inside?”
“Yes, some,” Bess replied. “Why do you ask?
“Most likely, he will take it to a money exchange. They give better rates than the hotels—more drachmas for the dollar.”
“Maybe we can do some investigating on our own,” Nancy declared. “How many money exchanges are there in Athens?”
“Oh, quite a few,” the captain replied. “But with hundreds, even thousands of tourists here-no one at an exchange would remember boy.” The officer frowned slightly and added, “If we catch him, we tell you.”
“Efharistó,” Bess said as everyone turned to leave. “Now what?” she asked Nancy. “I suppose there’s no sense trying to check out all the money exchanges. ”
“True,” the girl detective replied, “but I have a hunch the boy probably stopped at one near the Acropolis.”
“I think we passed one when we were in the taxi,” George said. “It’s that way.” She pointed toward a narrow street bordered by apartments.
Quickly, Nancy darted to the traffic light. The cousins trailed after her, crossing the intersection and walking briskly to the other side past the buildings. Soon they reached another corner and their destination.
“Look at that line of customers,” George remarked.
“Which line?” Bess asked. “There are about five of them.”
“Come on,” Nancy said, stepping inside.
The room was crammed with people. Several were seated on benches along the wall, but most of them were standing.
The young detectives separated. Bess looked for the small boy who had stolen her wallet while Nancy and George tried to speak to the clerks.
“Excuse me, excuse me,” George said as she weaved in front of two people.
“Wait your turn,” a woman in line replied.
“But I only want to ask the teller a question.”
“Yeah, well, that’s all I want to do.
