‘Keep a very careful watch, child,’ warned Pala Dawa, almost in a whisper. ‘We could both die if we fall in.’

And then she began to see the skeletons on the lakebed. Some hunched beside rocks underwater. Some lying on their sides as if they were still trying to ward off the cold. A few still had the grey rags of their clothes floating around their wrists or waists. Most of them were a dull grey like the pebbles at the bottom. A few here and there still appeared whitish through the leaden water. ‘Those must be the most recent ones,’ thought Rinzing. ‘I wonder when they came here and fell in. And did those huge grey creatures eat them with those huge pink teeth once they fell in?’

As Pala Dawa walked unsteadily through the lake with Rinzing quietly warning him about the rocks and creatures, the cold began to overcome him.

His whole body was sometimes numb, and sometimes it burned as he felt the extreme cold searing his skin.

Once, he stepped on a skeleton and felt the bones crunch under his feet. As he cried out in fear and alarm, Rinzing reassured him: ‘It’s only some old wood, Pala. It crumbled under your feet. It looked soft enough, so I let it go. Look out! There is that rock jutting out to your right. Keep left, Pala . . . ’
