After Dee hung up on Dwayne, he dialed her number back right away. However, he received a busy signal. He beat his fist on the desk. Dwayne tried so hard to keep his past separated from his present but his attempts failed over and over again. Dwayne picked the phone back up and dialed a number.
“Hello?”
“It’s Dwayne.”
“Well, Dwayne! It’s good to finally hear from you,” Bobbie said.
“Cut the crap, Bobbie. Why are you bothering Deidre?”
“Now, who says I’m bothering her? Did she say that?”
“That’s what it sounds like to me.”
“I’m offering her an opportunity you can’t. Funny, huh? I’m the one that got shafted but I can make more things happen than you.”
“Listen to me and listen real good. I want you to stay away from her. You hear me? And quit offering her money.”
“What are you gonna do about it?”
“Whatever I need to do about it,” Dwayne said.
“Oh. Now is that supposed to be a threat? Aww, man, I’m disappointed in you.”
“Bobbie. I’m serious.”
“Well, I would be willing to do just about anything for the right price.”
Dwayne sat silent. He knew what that meant. It had been years since they’d parted ways as business partners. Yet, Bobbie still hunted him like a lion searching for prey. He never ceased to find ways to take advantage of their past and make money from Dwayne. Everywhere he went, Bobbie followed. Sometimes, Dwayne wanted to let it all go and allow Bobbie to do what he wanted to do, but he couldn’t risk Bobbie putting his personal and professional future in jeopardy again. So, he continued to pay him off to keep him quiet. Dwayne had paid Bobbie sixty five-thousand dollars, not including the money he’d paid to buy him out of their business.
“How much?” Dwayne asked.
“I think forty-thousand dollars ought to cover it—for awhile anyway.”
“Forty-thousand dollars?! I’m not paying you nothing.” That was twice what he’d paid him last time.
”Okay, I can call Deidre up and tell her some stories about the good old days. I wonder where I should start first? I know. I’ll send her a copy of some newspaper articles from Texas.”
“Fine,” Dwayne said through clenched teeth.
“Great. I do thank you. It’s always a pleasure doing business with you. You can send my money to the same spot.”
“Bobbie, I’m not going to take this forever.”
“I got news for you, buddy. You’ll take it as long as I give it.” Bobbie laughed and hung up.
As Dwayne replaced the phone on the receiver, he leaned back in his chair and rubbed his temples, thinking he had to end this. Unfortunately, the only idea Dwayne had meant killing Bobbie. And more and more, that looked like the only permanent solution.
