Suddenly, a hefty, fatty foot with five toes buried in flesh began to pound and mash the unwelcome diner; the pock-faced, pointy-fanged viper. Squirming and writhing, he held on tight; for his gristly snack he was prepared to fight. When the muscly grip of a slinky-snorkel made him choke and splutter on his tasty morsel, with a mighty stretch and a crack like a whip, Smudge sprang out from between his lips, leaping and bounding, all senses confounding.

Hissing and spitting, the enemy retreated and slipped under a rock, this time defeated.

With a victory trump from a slinky-snorkel, a very excited smudgy gerbil celebrated his new-found liberty by throwing a wild dance party. Thumping and drumming their feet, the gerbils grooved to the gerbil beat. Pulling funny faces and stomping their feet, they re-enacted the villain’s defeat. Escaping from the killer’s jaws, they took each other by the paws and, thrilled just to be alive, all three began to jive. But as it was before and will be again, all thought of the fiend that had caused their anguish, in a skip and a jump, quickly vanished. And so the brotherhood of gerbils, thumping and drumming their feet, returned to their digging beneath the sand’s burning heat.
