“I have to admit, I was surprised to get your call,” she said.

Spenser grimaced as if she had something distasteful in her mouth. “Believe me, it wasn’t a call I wanted to make.”

“Then why did you?”

“Because the bottom line is, I need to solve this case. That means using every resource at my disposal,” Spenser replied, her voice tight. “And because nobody has more experience with this case than you do, you’re a resource I needed to tap. So, whether I liked it or not—and spoiler alert, I didn’t—I bit the damn bullet and called you anyway.”

Blake Wilder looked at her with that irritatingly emotionless, completely neutral disposition Spenser remembered so well. Blake sat back, crossing her legs and folding her hands, resting them on her knee as Spenser shifted in her seat, doing her best to tamp down the tide of irritation rising within her. It had been a few years since she’d last seen Blake, but with her long, strawberry blonde hair, jade green eyes, and lean, toned physique, she looked exactly the same. Beautiful, intelligent, and dedicated—it was no wonder she was the Bureau’s golden girl. And as much as it galled Spenser to admit, Blake was highly effective in the field. As the silence lingered and the tension in the air between them began to crackle, Blake looked away and took in Spenser’s office.

“So… you’re a small-town sheriff now. I have to admit, I did not see that coming,” Blake said in a condescending tone that rankled Spenser’s nerves.

“Yeah, well, not all of us were given a golden ticket by the Bureau.”

Blake’s smile faltered and she seemed to bristle at Spenser’s not-so-subtle rebuke. Spenser knew she was being petty. She also knew that Blake was an exceptional agent and had earned everything she had. Spenser had never run across somebody more devoted to the job, nor anybody who worked harder than Blake Wilder. The word “obsessed” had always been how Spenser had described her, but she’d meant it in the best way possible. But Spenser wasn’t about to tell her any of that. The truth was, she’d found Blake a bit arrogant, and she didn’t want to encourage that already puffed up ego to grow any bigger.

They’d only worked together for a brief period of time back in New York, but it was long enough that Blake had left quite an impression on her—in both good and bad ways. They’d worked together long enough for Spenser to both admire and despise her. She and Blake, as they said, had history. And it was complicated.

“Listen, what’s past is past for both of us. Water under the bridge and all that,” Spenser said. “Right now, all I care about is this case. I’ve got one girl missing and one girl dead in the morgue already and I owe it to the people of this town to prevent anything else from happening.”

“Fair enough,” Blake said.

“Are you sure your unit can spare you?” Spenser asked. “This might take a minute.”

“I’m here, aren’t I?”

Spenser cocked her head.
