I bring the records back to the house and go through more of them in search of mentions of investigating Grant Sinclair, Luisa’s biological father. I quickly find that they did manage to track him down during the time of the original investigation and interview him about his daughter. He was extremely cooperative and let them thoroughly search his home without any hesitation. They weren’t able to find any indication that Luisa had ever been in the home, much less that he had taken her or that she had run to be with him.

Immediately after the police came to him at his new home, Luisa’s father came back to Willow Springs insisting on being a part of all the searches. He insisted the entire time that he had nothing to do with his daughter’s disappearance and hadn’t been in her life in almost a decade. I’m fascinated by the dynamic. I try to find anything about his current whereabouts but can’t find anything. His number has been changed, and the house where he had been living during the investigation is now listed as having gone up for rent again only a year after the disappearance.

Not wanting to waste any time, I get in touch with the team Eric assigned to assist me and task them with finding him again.

This entire situation is getting more complex and intriguing with every detail I uncover and the questions just keep building on themselves. I know it’s very unlikely Luisa killed Oscar on her own and was able to dispose of him, without any assistance, and then not make herself known or make any contact with anyone. From what I’ve heard about her family, I can understand Luisa not necessarily wanting to go home to her mother, but I would think she would make some sort of appearance, if only to reconnect with her dear friends.

A thought occurs to me, and I start looking up the contact information for all the local hospitals and emergency departments. I start calling them, asking if any of them are treating a Jane Doe. I give a general description of Luisa based on the age she would be now and the picture I’ve seen of her. As I’m describing her, I wonder if that’s still accurate. I can’t shake the thought of the blonde woman Oscar was seen with outside his house and who showed up on the security footage outside the Breeze-In.

One by one, the hospitals tell me they aren’t treating any Jane Does, that all their patients are fully accounted for, and my hope fades a little more. But then I broaden my search. A call to a hospital in the next town results in confirmation that they do have a Jane Doe around the age that Luisa would be.

“The police have been informed,” the woman I’m speaking with over the phone tells me. “She didn’t have any form of identification when she was brought in, and she hasn’t been able to communicate with us to tell us who she is.
