Rich Market

Ava pushed aside the feeling of Wong wanting them gone. Maybe she was just reading that into the situation in her desire to find the one responsible for what Kelly and the other victims had gone through. What the other victims were still going through. Hell, she needed someone to punish for what they had done to those victims.

It wasn’t right to want to punish Tobin Wong just because he was rich and seemed a bit indifferent to the woes of others. Just because he would rather be focusing on cultivating his luxury hotels instead of getting down in the trenches, wallowing in the mud and blood with Ava and Bella and the victims of the crimes he might or might not know anything about.

At the moment, it looked as if he might not have anything to do with it. He might not know anything about it. His hands might indeed be clean. At least in this case.

So, she pushed her thoughts and feelings aside. Hard.

“Mr. Wong, do you own hotels in Japan?” she asked.

His face brightened, his smile gleamed, his eyes sparkled with pride. “Of course, I do. Japan is a rich market for luxury hotels. A very rich market.” He flourished with one arm to indicate the office space. “And, as you have noticed, I’m sure, I am a big fan of all things Japanese.”

“I did notice. I just didn’t realize Japan would be a big market for luxury hotels. Yours seem to be rather… pricey.”

He smiled as he sat straighter and smoothed his tie. “Well, luxury comes with a price tag, doesn’t it?”

“One I prefer not to look at too long,” Bella said, smiling back.

“Me, too,” Ava said. “Usually way overpriced. You always pay too much for way too little in return.”

“I know, right?” Bella said. “I mean, when you go to the most expensive restaurants… Have you ever noticed that the more expensive the plate, the less there is on it?” She laughed in a scoffing manner and flapped a hand.

“I have,” Ava answered. She turned to Wong. That same measured smile sat on his face, but his eyes were steely. He was not impressed by their flippant and less than stellar assessment of the world of the elite of which he was a member. “Which of your hotels are popular in Japan?”

His smile was authentic again. “The Pearl and the Diamond, naturally. Two of the most luxurious and most expensive of my chains.”

“Wow, really? I thought maybe the more touristy one. What was that one?” She snapped her fingers as if trying to recall the name.

He cleared his throat and shifted in his seat. “Seascapes. Seascapes is the, uh, touristy resort you must be thinking about.”

“That’s it. Yes, Seascapes. It reminded me of ‘We’ll leave the light on for you’ only with hot tubs, champagne, chefs, and the price tag to go with it.” Ava laughed as if she had made the best joke ever.

Wong, however, did not laugh. A stormy expression flashed over his face, and she would have missed it if she had not been watching him.
