“I THINK WE should go,” Lovie said. I heard her, but I was barely listening. Ike was talking to me inside my head and every word was critically important. I clung to him and the fact that he truly knew me. The secrets between us were intoxicating.

“I’m just not sure it’s fair to them,” my mother said.

I love you, came through. Ike kept telling me, but I never responded the same. It wasn’t because I wasn’t one hundred percent certain that I loved him more than anyone I’d ever met before in my life, but because . . . it was hard to love someone my mother hated. I sighed and thought back, You’re a lover. Ike was never insulted. He was amused.

“We would do it for them. We have done it, and our mothers before us. The Virago is a common enemy.”

The word Virago caught in my mind. “What are you guys talking about?”

All three of them turned and faced Ruby, Maya, and me. “There’s a . . . party,” my mother said and then looked at Sloane and Lovie for approval. They nodded as if party was as good a word as any. “In the next county up. There will be a lot of witches there, and we want to ask them what this area has been like since we left.”

“Been like?”

“What’s going on with the Virago.”

I’d never been around a lot of witches. In fact, I’d never actually met a witch outside the women in this room. “Really? Like how many?”

My mother shook her head. “It’s hard to say. A witch from Kingsway, Tara Jane, and her coven host it every year. It’s been a part of their family for a while.”

“Have you guys been before?”

All of our mothers stared at each other with dulled facial expressions. “Once. When we were almost your age. Our mothers brought us.”

“By the looks of you guys, it was a great time.” Ruby said what we were all thinking.

“It was,” my mom said in a way that should have ended the conversation.

Sloane chimed in with, “The Kingsway coven is always a good time.” She leaned back and smiled at the ceiling as if remembering a specific night that she wasn’t going to share. I wondered if there were going to be witches there our age. If they were attending Kingsway while we were surviving Woodstown. If their mothers looked like ours and if they too had lived their entire lives afraid of an invisible group of witches called the Virago.
