Strategy: Soul Deposits

The stars seemed to twinkle with delight against the clear, black sky. Each one was but a dot in the heavens, and yet each shone just as brightly as it could. I thought what a fitting representation of us they were, each only a speck but each with significant light. In the cool night air, the crickets chirped around us, the heavens sprawled out above us, and, as we lay there in silence marveling at the beauty before our eyes, my soul felt at rest.

My own soul seems to connect with the stars. It’s almost as if they know each other—far-distance friends whispering hello again. I thought about how we were created by the same hands, and I marveled at the thought. Stretched beneath the splendor of the starry sky, my fingers intertwined with my son’s, I had the acute realization that this is life. Not schedules and calendars. Not worries or newsfeeds. Those are merely time fillers. Life is beauty, splendor, awe, wonder, and, most of all, love.

On this gorgeous summer night, the four of us were stargazing in the hopes of seeing a shooting star. There was to be a meteor shower that night, and the boys’ excitement was palpable as we gathered our pillows and blankets. Flashlight in hand, we made our way down the yard and climbed onto our trampoline. I laid one blanket down as a barrier between the cold, damp mesh and our backs, and then we fluffed our pillows and lay side by side underneath the stars. Soon, a bright streak flashed across the sky, and my kids excitedly proclaimed, “Did you see that!” We went on to see twenty-six more meteors that night, and it is forever engraved in my heart as one of the best, most awesome nights of my motherhood. Lying hand in hand with my children watching shooting stars travel across the sky was truly magical. That night was a soul deposit.

A soul deposit is anything that feeds your soul. You spend so much time and energy on your loved ones, and you’re awesome for that. You feed your family’s souls each and every day in a million little ways. What do you feed your soul with? Have you forgotten about it? Soul deposits are sort of like the desserts of life, except the more you indulge, the healthier you will be. I sure do wish desserts worked that way as well. I believe the soul yearns for connection, beauty, art, spirituality, nature, awe, play, and truth. The more we feed it those things, the more content we feel.
