There are a few things to remember about a coach/mentor relationship:

Apply the serving mindset, giving and helping whenever you can.

Invite them to be guest speakers in your programs.

Invite them to be guests on your podcast.

Community

Thanks to my community upbringing, it was the norm for me to belong to something bigger than me or my family.

But, as is often the case, when something feels normal, we take it for granted. And I sure did. I was even embarrassed by my special upbringing and hid it away.

Over the years, this feeling of being alone, not fitting in anywhere, and having to wear a mask when taking part in other communities grew stronger and stronger. So I spent many of the early years building my business in solitude. I used the introvert card as an excuse, trying to convince myself that I didn’t need anyone and preferred to be by myself. But even introverts need community. It wasn’t until my midlife unraveling that I realized that the reason I felt like I didn’t belong anywhere was that I didn’t fully belong to myself.

This quote by Brené Brown expresses that beautifully: “True belonging is the spiritual practice of believing in and belonging to yourself so deeply that you can share your most authentic self with the world and find sacredness in both being a part of something and standing alone in the wilderness.”

Hopefully rumbling with your story in Part I helped you uncover certain parts of you that you were hiding or overlooking because you believed they didn’t belong in the business world. Once you feel like you belong to yourself, you will be ready to find or create communities where you belong.

Now, where do you find communities? Many places! Here are some examples:

Local business networking groups: These can be valuable as long as there’s regularity and the same group of people show up frequently so you really get to know them. I wouldn’t count a one-time networking event as a community.

Paid business memberships, such as with the BNI (Business Network International) or the local chamber of commerce club

Online groups like masterminds, paid or free (shameless plug for the Gentle Business Alliance community :-))

Nonbusiness communities, such as faith-based or activity-based communities
