Katelyn marveled at Derek’s home. Sure, it showed plenty of rough spots. Yet the promise of a glorious home overshadowed those. The places where Derek had spent time and energy revealed his vision for the house and it matched what she would do.

If she didn’t live in New York City. This house made her tiny apartment look even worse than it already was. A place barely fit for human occupation.

Yet it provided the necessities. This house provided the aesthetics and space of a dream home. The white paint he’d slathered over the dark, damaged wood had brightened the place considerably. The white showcased the airiness of the design and the superb craftsmanship of yesteryear.

“If you promise not to cringe, I’ll show you the third floor.” Derek peered at her, as he paused at a door that looked as though it led to an upper floor.

“I promise.” She had the vision to see beyond the bad stuff and recognize the potential. It constituted a required skill in her profession.

He opened the door. A charming attic staircase greeted them. As did the scent of an old house. An enticing smell of wood and age. The white paneled walls offered a bright touch.

“Painting is all that’s been done up here. As far as I know, nothing was damaged on this floor.” He climbed the steep stairs, taking them two and three at a time, likely because of his long legs.

She collected the skirt of her maxi dress in one hand and followed him. The stairs were old and worn. They creaked faintly as they made their way to the top level.

Once there, Derek stopped and gave her time to take in the landing and the hallway. Four doors and a final one at the back.

“There are three bedrooms up here and a bathroom.” He showed her each of the rooms.

“The rooms weren’t painted?”

“No. I want to take the wallpaper off first. As you can see, it’s peeling.”

“It is. But the wood is freshly painted?”

His lips quirked. “You might notice there isn’t much wood up here?”

“I did. I guess if this was the servants’ quarters, they didn’t get to enjoy the gorgeous trim and extras the family took for granted.” A shame because the servants had worked hard.

“That was an added expense the owners weren’t interested in making.” Derek pointed out a sliver of a linen cupboard.

At least that small nicety had been offered. The bathroom made her sigh. “This is bigger than the one in my apartment.”

“It is. But that wouldn’t hard.”

She eyed it with dubiousness. “It’s still small.”

“I’m surprised they managed to squeeze in a bathtub. It and the pedestal sink have seen better days.” He pointed to the sink that offered no place to put even a toothbrush. A small rickety shelf above the sink must have been included for that purpose.

“Do you think these tiles are original?”

The tiles showed missing grout and several of the tiles were chipped or outright broken.

“My guess is they are. These tiles would have been the most inexpensive ones available, and probably weren’t here when the house was built.
