“So you were raised in London?”

Michael, who was sitting in a chair near the edge of her bed, nodded. “I lived there until I was eighteen. After that, I left to become a steward at one of my uncle’s estates.”

“Who is your uncle?” Audrey could not explain the insatiable curiosity she had about his life. She found herself wanting to know every detail, regardless of how small.

“The Duke of Pelham.”

Her mouth dropped open at his calm revelation. “The Duke of Pelham? My god, Michael. I did not know you had such lofty relations. Whatever are you doing working as a steward?”

He shrugged. “I prefer it.” He leaned forward and steepled his hands together. “My father was the youngest son of the old duke. I am my father’s youngest son. It was either the army or clergy for me, so I chose to do something I enjoyed instead.”

“Could you not have married an heiress? I am sure any number of young ladies would be ecstatic to marry into such a distinguished family.”

Michael grimaced. “I could not imagine a worse fate. Who wants to marry someone that is only in it for the prestige of my family’s name?”

“I assure you that most marriages are for that exact reason.”

“Sadly you are right,” Michael answered. “But when I marry, it will be because I care about the lady in question.”

“What sort of lady do you fancy?” Audrey leaned forward and eagerly awaited his answer.

Michael’s eyes twinkled at her as he considered the question. “One who excites me.”

Audrey’s face fell. “What sort of answer is that?”

“The only acceptable answer,” he stated matter of factly. “I could never be married to someone who did not inspire excitement.”

“In that case,” Audrey said with a light chuckle. “What excites you?”

He winked at her. “You.”

“Be serious, Michael!”

“I am completely serious.”

“But you hardly know me.” Audrey could not understand his fascination with her. They had only known each other for two days. It had taken her nearly twenty-one years to get Braedon to notice her.

“It never takes me long to decide what I want. Anyway, enough about me,” Michael said with a wave of his hand. “What about you? Why are you not married?”

Audrey sat up and crossed her legs under the cover. “I do not want to marry.”

Michael’s face echoed his amusement. “So, Braedon has not come up to scratch then?”

Audrey thought about punching his arm, but gave up the idea since it would seem childish. “I am not waiting on Braedon Grey to ask me, if that is your question. Besides, it was my decision to not marry.”

Michael sat back in his chair and eyed her impassively. “What sort of gentleman sleeps with a lady without the benefit of marriage?”

Audrey’s cheeks flamed. “What makes you think that I have slept with him?”

He chuckled at the question. “Come now, Audrey. Do you seriously expect me to believe that you two spent the night together and only talked?”

She did not even try to deny it. “How do you know that?”

Michael sighed and gave her a pitying look.
