CHAPTER NINE
Garza lit a smoke. âHeâs going to survive. If he were dead, weâd know by now,â he said matter-of-fact. He paced the living room as Lucy sat on the sofa watching the news.
âWho the fuck carries a gun on a hiking trail?â she asked.
Garza snickered. âI should have known heâd have a piece.â
âWhy?â
âBecause any man with a past like his wouldnât be caught without protection.â
âMore shit we have to shovel,â Lucy said.
âWeâll be better prepared next time. We canât afford not to be.â
âYou ever get caught out there? I mean someone almost put one in your ass?â Lucy asked.
âNot me but others I knew. There was a manâsome nobody who had slept with a made guyâs wife. He kept a twenty-two on him all the time. Some guys had been sent to take care of him. When they finally caught him, he put two fellas down before catching a bullet in the noggin. These guys he put down were enforcers, but they had underestimated him. And they paid for it.â
âWeâll be more careful.â
âSoto will be on high alert. Even if he figures it was a random dog loose on the trail, the whole thing is enough to shake him up. Heâll be watching his back.â
âSince when is an A.D.A. getting attacked by a dog not news?â Lucy asked as she turned the knob on the TV. âThey report on trivial shit, but an A.D.A. nearly dying doesnât make it?â
âItâs not news because he doesnât want it to be.â
âWhat about the cops?â
âThey will buy whatever he tells them.â
âShit,â she said, âI thought we had him for sure.â
âWeâll get him,â Garza said, âwe wait until things settle and give it another shot.â
âPoor Sarge. I canât believe we just left him like that.â
âWe didnât have a choice.â
âYeah, but he would never have been in that mess had it not been for us.â
âLet it go.â
âHow? I mean donât tell me you donât feel something. He was our friend.â
âI buried my last friend on the beach. Sarge wasnât a friend, he was a soldierâa means to an end. What I feel is tired, frustrated, angry but I ainât the sentimental type.â
Lucyâs phone vibrated. She picked it up and ran her thumb across the screen.
âItâs a text from Martinâ¦he wants me to meet him at the hospital. Soto is going to have surgery on his leg.â
âWhich hospital?â
âCedars.â
âIâll take you,â Garza said.
