F IGURE 4.12: S PIRALLING THROUGH THE N OSE

This spiralling energy is led downwards into the body as you inhale, causing the Qi of the lungs to swirl. This helps to manifest the energy of Taiji in the body, which assists in moving Qi in an enlivening manner throughout the rest of the meridian system. When intermediate to advanced stages of internal practice have been reached it is possible to feel how this spiralling energy moves not only into the lungs but down into the lower Dan Tien on inhalation as well.

When you inhale in the Daoist arts you wish to ensure that your nostrils flare slightly to create more space and allow more breath into your nose. This can take a little practice but after a while it becomes automatic and does not take any conscious effort.

It is also useful before beginning breath work to seal off one nostril by pressing it shut. Take a few breaths in and out through the open nostril and then repeat the exercise on the other side. This just ensures that both are open and involved in the breathing process during your exercises.
