Green Slime

Here’s a way to watch how primitive fungus spread all over the world — like slime.

You will need

• a clear glass jar with a lid

• a slice of bread

• water

1 Put a slice of bread in the glass jar.

2 Poke three tiny holes in the lid of the jar.

3 Add a few drops of water to the bread and screw the lid on.

4 Look at the slice of bread through the jar every day. Soon you’ll see dots of bluish-green fuzz start to grow on the bread. If you wait a few days more, the fuzz will grow into big clumps. Don’t open the jar, or you’ll let the fuzz get all over your house!

5 When you finish watching the fuzz grow, throw the jar away — carefully.

That blue-green fuzz is bread mold. It comes in tiny spores, just like algae, moss, and baby ferns. Mold spores are floating in the air all around us. You trap some in the jar when you seal it. All they need to grow is a little bread for food and some water. The spots you see are thousands of mold spores crowded together. With enough air, water, and bread, they can keep multiplying forever.
