(SUN WUKONG sits in the woods. He’s a beaten man. LAOSAN enters.)

LAOSAN A simple drop of water from above

Is a simple reminder of my love

SUN WUKONG Who’s there?

LAOSAN With a simple drop of water on your face

Remember that I’m with you always

SUN WUKONG Laosan?

LAOSAN With a simple drop of water

SUN WUKONG A simple drop of water

(SUN WUKONG reaches out to his son, but LAOSAN doesn’t respond, acting out his father’s song.)

Tomorrow my son would meet his wife

By Pearl River where I broke his heart

She’d take his hand, she’d hold it fast

And give to him a brand new start

They would walk away from the water

While I try to mend the past

Tomorrow my son would take his daughter

Down to Pearl River where my dreams fade

He’d smile as she takes her first step

And tell her she need never be afraid

He promises he’ll never let her down

While I try to keep my word

Tomorrow, my son will meet me on the land

Near Pearl River where my life began

He’ll show me how his children have grown

I will hold the family that I’ve never known

I will tell him how he makes me proud

While he tries to ease my pain

But he’s lying in an unmarked grave

And tomorrow will never come

Today, I seek no more tomorrow

The Monkey King gives up his crown

If I could only find my way back home

To lie beside my son in the very same ground

This saltwater town will be my grave

Why did I ever have to come here, my son

My son, what have I done

(SUN WUKONG falls to his knees and tries to scoop water onto his head, but finds none. He buries his face in his hands instead.)
