Arrival

Geller offered her a ride, but Anna declined. After she finished the bag of Cheetos, they went separate ways.

Now as she drives home, she’s fretting about how much evidence she left behind.

She left no prints. Had her hair and her face covered. And she’d been with Hannah’s body earlier, so if any of her DNA is found in that morgue room, any good lawyer could easily argue that it was transferred to Hannah when still at the trailer park and then fell off in the morgue.

She’s thinking too much of it. The County Coroner’s building is an unsheltered structure with a clear wind path leading to its front door. It would be leveled come Monday.

The future doesn’t exactly matter much to Anna anyway.

It’s all coming to a head.

When she gets back to her apartment, her mood immediately worsens. She had forgotten why she’d left in such a rush in the first place. Forgotten about the noises upstairs.

She stares at the building as she turns off the ignition, pulls out her knife, and flicks the blade open. She runs her thumb against the steel as she thinks.

It’s times like this that Anna wishes she had a gun. The only reason she doesn’t is because when she’s fantasized about finding this killer, she’s pictured plunging a knife into his guts.

A gun would be far too quick.

Impersonal.

Pulling the trigger harder makes no difference. Anna wants to stab and twist, but now that she’s closer to that dream than ever, she realizes a gun would increase her odds of winning. Then again, she always pictured putting the puzzle together on her own. Finding where he lived. Slipping through a window and waiting in the dark.

She didn’t think she would be the one to be hunted.

Anna opens the door and slams it shut. The entire apartment building is black. She didn’t leave a light on, and neither did the Shepards, but still, the stairwell light should be on.

She turns on all the light switches in the entry hall and doesn’t waste time heading to the third floor. When she’s at her door, she looks both ways before bending to inspect the tape. She takes her phone out at the same time and compares the pictures she took.

The tape is in the exact same place. Unless it was replaced down to the millimeter, the door hasn’t been opened.

She enters her apartment and locks the door behind her. Even with the tape in place, she still searches every room and closet. She feels like a little girl as she bends to look under her bed, but it’s worth the peace of mind.

The windows are all locked as they were when she left, and being on the third floor, someone would need a comically long ladder to reach them.

Despite the hour, she puts on a pot of coffee, changes into comfier clothes, and heads into the little office.

Tonight, she is going over everything.

She knows whoever is behind these murders has read the stories she posted when she
