1. What do I really enjoy doing?

2. When do other people compliment me?

3. In what subjects did I do well in school?

4. What comes easy for me?

5. What is hard for me?

6. If I could change my life in any way, what would I do differently?

If you’re a pleaser, the most difficult thing for you to do will be to act on what you discover about yourself. Don’t let any critical-eyed parents or friends be naysayers in your plan. It’s a very different thing to listen to what someone has to say and to believe it’s the only opinion that counts.

Firstborns, more than middleborn or younger children, are the ones most susceptible to what many folks call a “midlife crisis.” That’s because firstborns spend their lives trying to please everyone else and to be who other people want them to be. Then they reach age 40 or 45 and suddenly think, Hey, I’ve never done anything for myself. That’s why so many midlife firstborns suddenly change jobs, move across the country, begin to drive yellow Corvettes (and get caught speeding), and even change spouses for a younger model. What they’re saying is, I’m tired of everyone expecting me to do this and that. I want to be free, without anyone telling me what to do.

Don’t get caught in the trap of rebelling against others’ critical eyes. Learn to be as honest with yourself as you can in all things, great and small, on a day-to-day basis. Don’t try to be who you aren’t.
