The dream feed or rollover feed

A dream feed occurs when your baby is six months or weighs 8 to 9 kilograms, and you give him a bottle or breastfeed at night while he is asleep. The baby goes to bed at 6–7 pm after a feed, then at 10 pm every night you pick him up when he is asleep and feed him, still wrapped and asleep, till he is about ten months old. Once fed, burped, kissed and cuddled, put the sleepy baby back to bed … hopefully for a long sleep for all of you.

The dream feed tops him up with milk so he stays asleep over the early hours of 1 am to 4 am. Your partner can do the dream feed while you sleep or you may wish to breastfeed your baby for the dream feed—it’s up to you. I breastfed fully and enjoyed the experience immensely. But today I find both parents want to be involved with feeding the baby.

There is no scientific evidence to say that your baby will not take a nipple after he’s given a bottle. In fact, it is helpful if your baby will take both breast and bottle, especially when the time comes to weaning the baby or going back to work.
