Before reaching Death Valley, the wagons had to be abandoned, and most of the cattle were killed for food. By the end of the 900-mile trek from Salt Lake City, thirteen men had starved or died of thirst. Reverend Brier had lost about one hundred pounds.

The Briers and the surviving Jayhawkers walked through Death Valley and the Mojave Desert to Los Angeles. Reverend Brier sold his remaining oxen there, making enough money to open a boarding house. A few months later, the Brier family moved to northern California.

The Briers never prospected for gold, but they prospered in California and added three daughters to the family. For many years the survivors of the Death Valley ’49ers held reunions. Juliet hosted two of the reunions when she was eighty-eight and ninety-seven years old. She was nearly one hundred when she died. Today, Juliet Brier lies in an unmarked grave in a county cemetery near Sacramento, California.
