A Kengian protection spell. She had heard Erun speak of such a thing only once before. Few Kengians possessed the ability to create such a spell. It made sense that a book as important as the last Firemaster’s would have been protected – that was the only way it could have remained undiscovered all these years.

She listened in wonder as Erun repeated the words over and over, until his fingertips began to glow. The radiance spread slowly through his palm before forming a ball of blue light that hovered above the book.

Words began to materialise on the page.

Erun clapped his hands with glee. ‘What does it say?’ Gwyn and Arisa cried in unison.

‘They are the words of the last Firemaster. This is her book.’

Arisa leant over and started reading the Old Kengian words. She recognised the familiar format of scientific notes.

‘This is it,’ Erun said again, grinning. ‘I would bet my life this book contains the secrets to firesky.’

She gave him a dark look. Erun had a disturbing expression on his face, a look of wonder and anticipation Arisa had seen many times before. She realised the scientist in Erun wanted – no, needed – to create firesky. While she believed him when he said he wouldn’t hand over the secrets to Horace, she knew he also desperately wanted to rise to this challenge. And now he had the means to do so.

‘I still don’t think it’s a good idea,’ she began, but they were interrupted by a noise outside the door, and the turning of the key in the latch.

‘Words begone,’ Erun murmured as he waved his palm across the book. The words disappeared as a serving boy entered with a tray of food.

Erun smiled maniacally at the serving boy as he placed the tray on the table and made a hasty exit.

Arisa tried again. ‘Erun, you can’t—’

‘Arisa, this is it. Don’t you see how exciting it is?’ His eyes were shining.

‘Not really. In fact, it terrifies me.’

‘It is exciting,’ Gwyn cried. ‘It’s the real beginning.’

‘There has been a blood moon, and now there will be firesky.’

‘And then there will be the Water Catcher,’ Gwyn added with conviction.

No! Arisa wanted to scream at the pair. Firesky may come into being thanks to the book she’d found – how exactly had she found it? – but the Water Catcher wouldn’t arrive to save any of them from its devastation. Arguing with Erun and Gwyn was useless, though. One look at them, glued to the book and its contents, told her they were already lost. Lost to the promise of firesky and a Water Catcher who would never come.

Arisa was the only one seeing sense now. Her plan was their only hope.
