Chapter 21
Trista
The ticking clock filled the silence between Detective Spears and Trista. An awkwardness accompanied the ticking as she tried to get a read on him. He wouldn’t tell her why he had come by, only that it had something to with Seth, who was who-knows-where. “Is he in trouble?”
Spears didn’t answer. Instead, he lifted the cup of coffee she had made for him and took a sip. “Good coffee.”
“Jackson,” she said, looking him in the eye. “Tell me what’s going on.”
He looked down at his coffee, swirling the brown liquid inside the mug. “I just really need to speak to your husband.”
Trista could tell it wasn’t going to be easy getting past the detective’s protective shell. After all, he was trained. She placed her hand on his. “Jackson, we go back, don’t we?”
He nodded. “We go back a few years.”
“If there is something going on with Seth, I think it’s important that I know what it is.”
Spears stood up and walked over to the clock on the mantle. “I believe you and Seth are possibly in—”
“In what?” Seth asked from behind them. He walked into the living room and stood next to Trista.
“Where have you been?”
“I went for a little drive.” He placed his hand on Trista’s shoulder.
“But it’s late.”
“I thought you said you went to the store.” Spears focused his attention on Seth.
“I did. I went for a little drive to the store.” Seth held up a loaf of bread. “I wanted to make toast in the morning.”
Trista looked at the bread and then at Seth. He shot her a not-now look, and she knew something was wrong. None of this made any sense to her.
Spears stared at Seth as if waiting for him to speak first. It worked.
“Why are you here?” Seth tossed the loaf of bread onto the coffee table and took a seat next to Trista.
“You know why I’m here, Seth. I thought I was very clear about you staying away from Tuck.”
“What?” Trista turned to Seth. “You saw Tuck?”
“I don’t know what he’s talking about.”
Trista didn’t need to be a detective to know he wasn’t telling the truth. His voice had dropped a few decibels, a sign she’d learned about him a long time ago. But she didn’t dare call him out in front of Spears.
“Well, Tuck swears that someone was at his apartment. He says it was you.”
“And why would he think that?”
“He said he got a good look at you.”
“That’s a bunch of garbage,” Seth blurted out, exposing his cards.
Spears didn’t respond. He took another sip of coffee and then set it down on the table next to the loaf of bread. “Thank you for the coffee, Trista.”
“Are you leaving?”
Spears stared at Seth with a disappointing gaze. “I can’t help you if you won’t help me.”
Seth looked at Trista, and she knew he wasn’t sure what he should do. She reached for his hand and squeezed. “What’s going on?”
Seth looked down. “Off the record?”
Spears removed the badge from his belt buckle and placed it on the coffee table.
