The Negev Desert

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God.” Psalm 42.

The Bedouins call dust devils Jinn. Spirits of the desert that can assume human or animal form. And once they do, they have supernatural power over mere mortals. On the other side of the world, the Navajo call them Chiindi, the spirits of their ancestors. If it spins clockwise, it is a good spirit. The other way? Not so good. A demon.

The man watched a dust devil spinning to his left front, picking up sand, catching it in the whirlwind, and dancing across the desert floor. He was dressed in loose black shirt and pants, and was barefoot. A strip of black cloth was wrapped around his head, leaving only a slit for his eyes. A leather belt was cinched around his waist holding two sheathed daggers; handles tilted forward, one on each hip. His hands rested lightly on the hilts of the weapons as he tracked the dust devil, the landscape lit by the stars and quarter moon.

He liked this place. It reminded him of where he came from. Barren, unforgiving, harsh.

The word Negev evolved from the word dry in Hebrew. Averaging less than 200 milliliters (or one cup) of rain per year, the area lives up the name. Despite containing over half of Israel’s terrain, it held less than ten percent of its population.

After being banished from Egypt, Abraham made the Negev his home for a bit, before moving on, which indicated a degree of wisdom. Moses sent scouts into the Negev during the Exodus, and then didn’t go there.

More wisdom.

The dust devil dissipated and was gone. The man shifted his attention, scanning the land ahead, slowly discerning the anti-intrusion and detection devices in the space in front of him.

Impressive.

And from what he knew of those who controlled the facility that held his target, they didn’t put all their trust in technology. Always wise. Nothing was more effective than a well-trained person.

The man-in-black reached up and pulled the strip of cloth across his nose down and sniffed the night air. Then he put it back in place. He knelt on one knee, lowering his head, and closing his eyes.

Searching.
