Chapter One:

Khaz

If the tangled mess of bruised skin and defined muscle hadn’t shifted subtly with each shallow breath, Khaz might have thought he was staring at a sculpture. It could have been a work of abstract art, crafted by hands skilled at blending the beautiful with the macabre. A part of him analyzed it as distantly as if it were that and nothing more.

It. Him.

He had a difficult time thinking of the haphazard pile of male parts before him as anything belonging to a living being. It was far easier to dismiss the body as an inanimate object. Otherwise, he’d have to acknowledge just how much damage a human could take.

What the hell did you get yourself into now?

Khaz didn’t know, but his eyes flicked towards the door as he considered getting himself right back out of it. He’d abandoned enough of his humanity over the centuries to where he lacked the motivation to try to change anything about the world, but that didn’t mean he delighted in the subjugation of humans, either.

That would have meant supporting the vampires, werewolves, and witches who had been responsible for obliterating the lifestyle he’d enjoyed for decades. Not likely.

Ten years had done little to dull his resentment of them.

He’d once lived a grand existence fleecing the oblivious rich. Now, he struggled to make a living by sucking and fucking in dirty alleys while those who had seized control played their sadistic games. People like him, who had been perfectly content with existing outside of the realm of human knowledge, had been thoroughly fucked over by the Takeover.

The members of the oh-so-creatively named Council that had stepped up to demand that all supernatural beings adhere unconditionally to the new status quo didn’t give a fuck. They had wholeheartedly embraced the philosophy that everyone was with them or against them, taking their entitlement issues several steps past sanity.

Anyone who spoke out against them found themselves facing the same fate as the humans they’d shunted to the bottom of the food chain. Even those who had originally supported the Takeover stepped lightly around the Enforcers. But as long as he didn’t outright defy the Elders or their ridiculous laws, Khaz could ignore them.

He did a damn good job of staying separate from it all.

The presence of the naked, nearly-motionless human on the floor mocked him. Right. A damn good job. The best.

Poor bastard.

Rejecting what little empathy he had left, Khaz locked the door he’d been leaning against. He tucked the key into his pocket, grimacing. Now he understood why the lock required a key on both sides. It wouldn’t be a proper slaver’s den if the apartment above it couldn’t contain an unruly slave or two.

At least it meant he wouldn’t have to worry about the man making a break for it when he turned his back.
