Chapter Nine

Kit

The sound that jerked me sharply out of sleep could only be described as a roar.

I shot bolt upright from where I’d curled up in a corner of the servants’ tent, breathing heavily as if I’d been having a nightmare.

The roar sounded again, waking more of the people around me and tearing through the silence of night. It was the volume and suddenness of the sound that had woken me, but it had another quality—something that didn’t occur to anyone else in the tent. There was something buried in the roar that seemed to tug at my insides, like a coded message meant for me alone. It was a primal thing that made my fur stand on end, and not necessarily in a bad way. It was… exciting.

Scrambling on all fours, I crawled over and between the other servants, cowering in fear, afraid to go out, and made my way to the door of the tent to peer out.

After Captain Locke’s squad had failed to return yesterday, more soldiers had gone, this time accompanied by the Imperium himself. They’d returned in early the evening without Locke or his squad and with grim faces—none grimmer than that of Carl the Gray.

I’d managed to observe the meeting that followed between Spyder and him, though I couldn’t hear what was being said. Once again, it seemed as if Spyder had the upper hand in the exchange, chiding the Imperium for his continued failure to secure Elle for his warlord. The Gray did nothing to hide his frustration, but I wondered if that frustration was about Elle, or about Spyder.

It had been too late then to move on, so we unpacked enough to spend one more night on Stackwell. Torches were lit around the campsite on the top of the hill, and guards stationed for the nocturnal watch, and it was that scene on which I now looked.

There were figures moving by the light of the flickering flames; soldiers running this way and that, trying to keep out of the way of the central figure which towered above them. The figure roared again, and I felt that primal urge shudder through me once more. This time it seemed as if it was linked directly to my libido.

I tried to force down the inappropriate sensations welling up in the pit of my stomach, but it wasn’t easy as I now recognized the figure as Rackham, silhouetted against the firelight, tossing his mane as he threw back his head to issue another roar. I might just have been a Domestic, but I was Feline enough to know what that roar meant: it was a challenge.

The guards charged in, but Rackham swung a spear in an arc around him, driving them back. I couldn’t imagine how he’d gotten out of his cage, or how he’d armed himself. How his mind had broken free of the Gray’s influence was a mystery, but he was free.

I had to remind myself to breathe as I watched, and even then, my breaths came short and shallow.
