CHAPTER NINE

Olivia Desmond stared at the trembling figure of her husband, Fred. His eyes were livid and accusing her of some sort of infidelity. “Are you going to sit on your fat ass and just glare at me, or are you going to get it out of your system?” she asked.

Fred gasped a few times, trying to calm himself. The children sitting around the dinner table lowered their eyes and squirmed slightly, very uncomfortable in the presence of the fight between their parents. They knew the fight had been brewing for quite a while, and at last, it was coming out into the open.

“I’m just asking how sick was your brother?” Fred said.

“He was pretty sick,” Olivia said, her voice trembling with anger. “He had a fever of over a hundred and mother was still down with her arthritis. You know that.”

“But why did you have to go there?” Fred asked. “Did you have other plans for your brother?”

“What?” she gasped. Her blue eyes widened, and her long, blonde hair seemed to bristle slightly. “Are you accusing me of incest?”

“If that’s the name, and it fits, wear it!” Fred shouted. He got to his feet. “You know, I’ve suspected it for quite a number of years, but this last trip proves it!”

“Proves what, you fathead?” Olivia asked, her voice dripping acid.

“I called that house while you were gone, saying I was a local banker. And it seems that your mother was fine, and your brother talked with me for several minutes, all during the time he was supposed to be in bed sick!” Fred yelled. “Talk your way out of that, you whoring bitch! And I imagine you will, just as you did when Linda was born!”

“Let’s get outta here,” Ronny whispered to the other children. They quickly got to their feet, and walked from the room. They each went to their separate rooms and Ronny was shaking. Did his mother really fuck Uncle Jack? That would be an interesting development. And that bit about Linda. It fit, too. They all knew mother had visited her brother approximately nine months before the twins were born.

The two adults downstairs still glared at each other over the length of the table. Fred was a tall man, with dark black hair and brown eyes. He worked out often, and he was slim and trim. Olivia was a tall woman, with ash blonde hair. Her face, was thin, and she had high cheekbones. Her thin lips were quivering with suppressed rage and surprise.

“So,” Olivia finally said, “you know. What are you going to do about it, you asshole?”

“What!” Fred gasped. He hadn’t really expected a confession.

“I know all about your little trips to the club house, and the so-called talks you have with the pros there. I know you never went to talk with the pros, but were fucking somebody’s daughter or wife. I hired a detective, Fred, a good one. His name is Heuser, if you want to check. And we got some
