Dinesh Patel kept staring out of the window overlooking the beautiful landscape sprawled beyond his affluent Surat neighbourhood against a fading evening sun.
Heâd been withdrawn to this plush sanctuary â his private study at the residential mansion â for almost the entire day. Nobody would ever disturb him here except in the gravest of an emergency â no exceptions.
He paced around the study, then settled in his chair. Dinesh then pushed a button at the side of his desk, resulting in a whirring sound. It was followed by the desk drawers mechanically turning around. Then appeared a concealed titanium door.
He reached for the combination lock pad and punched in the numbers. A well-lit safe opened up with neatly stacked orderly shelves containing files, pouches, cases, keys and other valuables.
He ignored everything and instead reached for a bottle and poured a 22-year old scotch, then carefully replaced the vintage and repeated the closing manoeuvre.
Of the many finer things in life Dinesh enjoyed, this was among his sneakier indulgences. Alcohol in Gujarat is like booze in Chicago during Al Caponeâs era. Thankfully, just like Chicago then, Dinesh had confederates in higher places. This particular whiskey was courtesy of one of his closest chums in the Navy.
Dinesh was a sporadic drinker, either at occasions which required it, or in times of joy or sadness. However, this was neither revelry, nor sorrow, and yet he found himself pouring. He now remembered he had done that during certain successes or failures back in his life. All involving various compromises or agreements he was about to make. And incidentally a few of those showdowns had involved, in one way or the other, his best pal Rajab.
He had left Rajabâs place downtown earlier that day. Skipping work, he came straight back to the house and had stayed in here since then. A lot of things were left unclear, unsaid, and hanging in the air.
He could see that his old colleague was expecting answers which he could not provide then. Not because he did not have them, but because he didnât know how to. He had suddenly developed a need for some hiatus alone to contemplate, and a drink.
No sooner had Rajab finished his explanation about his tests and conclusions, that it became clear to Dinesh that somehow a few diamonds had slipped through one of Patel & Patelâs specially secluded sorting department. Then, thanks to a human or computer clerical error, those stones landed on the maestroâs workbench.
It had happened previously once in awhile, but what caught Dinesh completely off guard in bewilderment was how could it happen with this specific consignment. Dinesh personally had very painstakingly created a separate facility to process that distinctly secure supply chain.
Rajab, on the other hand, saw his buddyâs face drain and go pale like heâd seen scarcely ever. Rajab did not ask or inquire if anything was wrong, as it was plainly apparent watching from the reaction. They had both sat in silence with Dinesh toying with a cup, though with Rajab progressively displaying signs of impatience.
