CHAPTER 9

The atmosphere inside Room 1430 was one of immense relief. They had Saeed Anwar in custody, and all fears of a detonation at one of London’s most iconic landmarks had disappeared with him. Shortly after his arrest, Jake had learnt that Saeed had been carrying a suicide vest beneath his winter coat, and that Imran Malik, the usually quiet and unassuming detective sergeant, had been the one to tame his inner lion and pry the detonator from Saeed’s grasp. Jake was, more than anything, incredibly proud of everyone on the team. They’d put their lives on the line to save the civilians who were oblivious to the realities of what had happened – and would continue to remain so. They’d put their lives on the line without a thank you from the general public, without a pat on the back, without a ‘well done’; he just wished he could have been there to help.

‘You did,’ Tyler said to Jake as they made a coffee in the canteen. Jake’s hip was still aching, but he’d started to get used to the pain of walking and had stopped using furniture for support. His head, however, was far from OK.

‘How do you work that one out?’

‘We all heard you over the radio. You saw Saeed first. Without your call, we would’ve missed him. And who knows what could have happened.’

Jake knew that was a lie. But he also knew that his friend was trying to cheer him up. Ever since the injury, Jake’s emotions had been all over the place. One second he was alert, the other vacant. One moment he was angry, the next he was depressed, the next elated.

The motherboard inside his head was frazzled. And it needed rest.

Sadly, there was no time.

As he and Tyler returned to Room 1430, coffees in hand, DS Imran Malik and DC Billy Vance were in the middle of the room talking with Mamadou. The two officers were in charge of interviewing Saeed Anwar at Paddington Green, the station designated for terror suspects and convicted terrorist offenders. Jake caught the end of a sentence as he passed, and listened in at his desk.

‘… I wouldn’t be surprised,’ Vance said.

‘And he didn’t want a solicitor?’ Mamadou asked.

‘No, sir,’ Vance replied. ‘He just sat there in silence. Didn’t say a single word.’

‘And he had this weird smile on his face,’ Imran added. ‘Like he knew something we didn’t.’

‘That’s typically what happens in an interview, Detective.’

‘I know, but this time it was different.’

‘Another attack?’

Imran shrugged.

‘Do we have any intelligence to suggest another one’s been planned?’

Jake, in his delirium, had been lost in the conversation. It wasn’t until the profound silence in the room caught up with him that he realised they were all waiting for a response from him.

The master with the key to the information.

‘Jake,’ Mamadou started. ‘Do we have any intelligence to suggest that he’s got another attack planned? Another associate in control perhaps?’

Jake held his breath. Searched his mind. He wasn’t sure of the answer himself.
