INTERNATIONAL WEAPONS TRADE
Trade in weapons came about as people traveled more widely. The Silk Road was an ancient route between Rome and China. Silk went westward, and wools, gold, and silver went eastward. Weapons were definitely objects of interest on the Silk Road, and elsewhere, as well. Traders also tended to travel with armed guards. Thus, new kinds of weapons made their way beyond borders along with traders. In addition, when opposing armies clashed they learned and copied technologies from one another.
Today, there is an ongoing international weapons trade, with laws and treaties to regulate it all. Yet there is also a thriving illegal weapons market. Today the United States is, by far, the worldâs largest weapons exporter, selling everything from simple handguns to drones and high-tech missile systems.
