Chapter Twenty-Seven

Jess is on the M4 junction forty-five turn off to Swansea when Warlow reaches her. He’s sitting in his car in the car park at Dyfed-Powys HQ when she answers.

‘Oh, for f–,’ is what he hears in reply before she corrects herself. ‘What the hell is going on?’

‘No idea. But there’s a Costa at Cross Hands in the new retail park. Why don’t I meet you both there?’

There’s no point them going to Swansea prison now, and there’s a muffled conversation between Jess and Catrin to that effect.

‘Okay,’ Jess says and kills the call.

It’s the wrong direction for Warlow, but the sooner they can talk this through the better. He knows Jess will feel the same. On the way, he rings Wyn Davies again for more details. It’s his case, and he’s already been to the prison. They’ve cordoned off the shower area but there’s nothing to see, no sign of a struggle. And until the post-mortem, they won’t know if this was a suicide, or a forced hanging. Bruises or any sign of a struggle might argue the latter. But that will be for the pathologist to decide.

‘You’re a bloody Jonah, Evan. I don’t hear from you for three years, then you ring me out of the blue about some sod in Swansea nick and the next thing you know, he’s croaked,’ Davies complains.

‘Send me a wax effigy. I’ll see what I can do.’

Davies let’s out a rumbling laugh. ‘My list of enemies is too long. But I’ll keep you in the loop on this. We’ll be interviewing other prisoners, obviously. Let’s just say I don’t expect a lot of noise when we do.’

Whatever has happened, even if this was not a suicide, informing on someone is a cardinal sin in prison. Anyone with a jot of survival instinct will say nothing.

Warlow gets to Costa first, texts Catrin for an order, buy coffees and finds a corner table out of earshot of other punters.

When they arrive, he repeats what Davies has told him.

Jess’s mouth stays a thin white line. When he finishes, she says, ‘I can see in your eyes that you don’t think this is coincidental.’

She shakes her head slowly. ‘I don’t know what I think yet. But you’re right. I smell fish.’

‘You think he hanged himself because he got wind that we were coming?’ Catrin asks.

‘Either that or someone made that decision for him.’ Warlow stirs his flat white.

‘Makes it even more vital that we find Kieron Thomas, doesn’t it?’ Jess is staring at the table as she sips her coffee.

‘About that,’ Warlow says and explains about finding the Thomas’s grandmother in the freezer.

‘You’re sure it’s his grandmother?’ Catrin asks.

‘Not yet. But I doubt it’s his Russian girfriend.’

‘Why would he kill his grandmother?’

‘Who says he did?’ Warlow throws the question back at her.

‘How do you see it, Evan?’ Jess asks.

He exhales slowly. ‘Thomas’s grandmother would get a pension. But that, of course, stops when you die.’

Catrin’s expression is pained. ‘So you think Thomas might have not wanted to report her death beause of that?’

‘It’s a regular income.
