Cynthia fiddled with her phone as she leaned against the front of her car. She yawned and brought it up to her ear. “Anything yet?”

“Ray isn’t moving yet. If he sees anyone suspicious, he’ll be all over it.”

“You trust he’s awake at this hour? Does he make a habit of getting up at seven am?”

“I don’t know the man’s sleeping habits, but I don’t see anything on the cameras yet.”

“I feel like a jackass standing out here you know.”

She could hear Jim laugh. “I’m sure you can deal with it. I’m the one about to be targeted. Besides, you’re on the side where I told you to be, right?”

“Yeah,” She looked over her shoulder at the man on his porch and turned back, “He’s looking alright. Must be retired to get up this early and just people watch. He certainly looks old enough.”

“Then you’re safe. Witnesses are not okay for our assassin. You’re safer out there than I am in here.”

“If you say so. I just hate being watched.”

“He’s harmless, probably. Now pay attention, keep the phone on, and hide in plain sight. Should be easy for you.”

“You saying I’ m plain?”

“No. Wait a second now. I see something. Ray’s on the move. You see anyone?”

Cynthia looked up from the phone and scanned left and right. “Not really. I see your friend moving, but no one else. He’s probably just stretching his legs.”

“Be sure.”

“Fine.” Cynthia walked down the sidewalk. “You better pay me back for this crap later.”

“You have my word.”

She stopped halfway down the curb and turned off the speaker option. “Yeah, there’s a guy that matches our guest’s description. He’s talking to him, but I can’t make out the face. He has his back to me. Should I get closer?”

“Don’t walk up on them, but amble on over to the motel’s parking lot.”

She did so and looked down at the short shorts she wore. “Were these necessary? I feel like a hooker in these.”

“That’s the general idea. Cheap hotel, and women hanging around. He’s seen it all before. It’ll all be business as usual for him. He’ll just brush you off. Those star glasses were a nice touch.”

“Girls I know that have these are always insufferable. It made sense when you explained it at the store last night.” Her voice turned louder, and switched accents to a more bratty pitch. “Oh honey, you know I love you.” She approached the pair and saw Ray get shoved out of the way.

Alfred’s stern even voice emerged. “Out of the way, old man.”

Ray bounced back. “Hey there, young whipper snapper. Is that any way to treat your elder?” He eyed him up and down. “Okay, maybe you’re not that young, but I could be your pa. You ever heard of human decency?”

“Overrated,” Alfred said without turning to face him. They were now about twenty feet in front of Jim’s motel room, in the parking lot.

“Aw, now don’t say that. Don’t tell me you’re too jaded by the world to help the less fortunate.
