Generally speaking, however, colitis is a disease of nervous origin. Conditions of spastic colitis or irritable bowel serve as a kind of “mirror to the soul.” The contractions alternate with a decrease in gastrointestinal transit time, which explains the constipation.
Constipation and colitis are often present over an entire lifetime, with phases of improvement alternating with aggravated periods connected to the normal incidents of life. But we need to be aware that there is more to the problem of constipation than the discomfort of not feeling suitably “emptied.” Constipation is increasingly viewed as a chief culprit responsible for two of the main scourges of the modern world—cancers, especially those of the intestine, because of the chronic irritation caused by the presence of stagnant stools; and high cholesterol, because the overdigestion of matter in the intestines frees up a greater quantity of cholesterol.
STANDARD TREATMENT
First, here is what you should not do: do not take laxatives. These products are the basis for one of the most widespread health problems in the world today: laxative abuse, which robs the body of water and minerals and can be fatal in the worst cases.
Instead, what is necessary is a change of lifestyle and a change of diet, incorporating food with a lot of roughage, like green vegetables. Fiber is particularly good for constipation, and its recent re-entry into the popular lexicon represents a huge step forward therapeutically.
ACUPOINT TREATMENT
For health problems that are this insidious and chronic, it is of enormous value to have within hand’s reach a simple and effective method like acupoint therapy. I have no hesitation in saying that it should be the first treatment option to be chosen. By way of example, I would like to quickly mention the story of one of my own patients, a twelve-year-old boy who was stricken with rectal paralysis. He was given a regular massage that stimulated the appropriate pressure points, which permitted him to have a daily bowel movement.
TECHNIQUES TO USE
Start establishing a regular time for bowel movements and at that time, strongly massage the principal points described below. In order to reeducate the intestine, it is best to stimulate the different points one after the other for two minutes each, once in the morning and once in the evening.
The second point is particularly effective for treating painful episodes of colitis and should be stimulated three times a day.
