Lefty O’Doul Bridge

(Wally Gobetz)

Perhaps Ruth and O’Doul are the exceptions proving the rule that John McGraw was an excellent judge of talent. Even more important, his aggressive, creative game plan always got the best out of his players, which goes a long way to explain why McGraw’s teams won ten pennants and five World Series.

Two years after he left the game, and forty-one days short of his sixty-first birthday, John McGraw died in 1934, from complications resulting from prostate cancer.

McGraw’s managing career extended for thirty-three seasons and his lifetime winning percentage of .589 ranks him third behind another pair of Irishmen, Joe McCarthy at .614 (more on him later) and Frank Selee at .598.

Irish winners.
