He politely introduced her as a guest at Tain, although from their curious looks she guessed they all knew her part in the story of Tain’s long-lost son.

‘That is where Bates lives,’ said Leo, nodding to a neat little cottage they were passing. ‘We can leave our horses at the inn, over there. Would you like to come with me to see him? His wife is a pleasant woman and will make you very welcome. Or if you prefer you can wait for me in the private parlour.’

‘Should I have brought a basket?’ she asked. ‘I did not think, but perhaps they will be expecting me to bring something...’

‘No, my mother sent one yesterday. Mrs Bates would appreciate your company, I am sure.’

‘Then I will come with you, if I may.’
