“King had cleared Wells of a manslaughter charge in Seattle, and sent him to Alaska—where he is now. It’s doubtful if Wells knows anything about it yet. The idea of the substitution came when Wells left a lot of his personal belongings behind with King. He began to pick up Wells’ mail, forwarding it to Alaska. Then came the message from Abner. He had to work fast, before the old man changed his will. He shaved off his moustache, dug out some of Wells’ clothes and came boldly on the scene. As we suspected, Agatha got wise first, and had to be eliminated. If he’d got you, down by the river, we might never have known…”

“I made a lot of bad guesses before the answers came out,” I said. “I was sure Mrs. Hill had done it—for a while.”

“What about Janet, Chuck?”

I turned. “She’s all upset over this thing—like everybody else. Before I go back to Portland I’m going to ask her for another date.”

“Yes?” Wheeler said, grinning.
