Chapter 19

Luke

Archer thought it would be a good idea to wait. Maybe even go up the mountain and tell Rilla what’s going on. But, something is telling me that Jessie can’t wait. We need to get her, now. This very instant. I don’t know who Cynfael’s got helping him. And, I don’t care. All I care about is getting Jessie away from him.

I let Archer drive this time. Eventually, we never even reached Claymont. We turned around halfway, when he finally realized that we can’t come up with a good plan, even if we had days or even weeks to come up with it. We needed more shifters on our side, but by the time we get up the mountain and back down, it might be too late. Cynfael might be onto us. And, knowing him, he’ll kill Jessie just for the heck of it.

I know I’d never be able to live with that on my conscience. Neither could Archer. So, finally, we agreed that we’d both rather risk our own lives, than risk hers.

“So, you know this warehouse?” I ask again, realizing that we’ve been too quiet in the car.

My radio doesn’t work, so no point in drowning our unwillingness to talk with an attempt at some upbeat songs. Not that this plan would work anyway.

“Yeah,” he nods, sounding a little agitated. “I already told you this.”

“I know,” I sigh. “I’m just…”

“Nervous?” he finishes my sentence.

“Yeah,” I nod, looking ahead of us into the illuminated part of the road, as much as the headlights would allow. “That, and a whole other combination of stuff.”

“I know the feeling,” he replies.

“So, are you finally going to tell me what’s going on between you two?” I can’t hold it in any longer.

Seeing we might die tonight, I honestly don’t want to leave any question unanswered. Especially not regarding her.

“What do you mean?” Archer frowns, refusing to look away from the road, his hands stuck firmly to the steering wheel.

“You know what I mean.”

“I already told you,” he explains. “I’m following the rules. Nothing else.”

“I know you are,” I admit. “But… the question is, do you want to?”

My comment catches him off guard. He probably wasn’t expecting me to be so direct. But, what’s the point in beating around the bush in a moment like this? It’s better to just say things as they are.

“Luke, what is it you are asking me?”

“I’m asking if you’ve ever considered Jessie being something more than just fun?”

It takes him a while to answer. I know why. The answer is yes. Just like with me. So, how do we sort this out?

“Does it matter now?” he shrugs, still refusing to look at me. “Not like anything will happen.”

“Why not?”

“Well…” he snorts. “Cynfael will probably kill us. I’m pretty certain of that. In the lucky event that this doesn’t happen, we’ll save Jessie, but then what? You know Rilla would never, ever, ever allow us to mate with a human. Don’t even think it.”

“She’s my sister,” I remind him.
