It was after dark when we finally got home. The spa had taken an extra hour of our time, but then, so had dinner afterward. I had been less shy this time, and had let Mr. Karenina order at the restaurant while I sat there in my new suit and looked him over, wondering how he could look so composed after all we’d shared. He was like some royal prince in a fairytale, always aware he had to maintain his iron dignity while his servants bustled about him, seeking his favor. I guess maybe he had built a kind of emotional shell to protect himself from all the bad things that had happened to him in his life. I wondered if I was one of the privileged few who saw past his defenses at the incredibly lusty man beneath.

When the lobsters arrived, perfectly cooked and already shelled for us, I followed Mr. Karenina’s lead and dipped each tender, flaky piece in the melted butter before sucking it off my fork and chasing it down with the fine, sparkling Chablis he had ordered. I’d never had lobster before. My family just wasn’t the lobster type. We were more the Midwestern meat-and-potatoes type, but I found I really liked the melty taste, and I thought about suggesting it to Chloe for her wedding reception.

Dessert was tiny, imported, Sicilian tomatoes in a rum-sugar syrup over gourmet vanilla ice cream. I thought it was a strange combination until Mr. Karenina spoon-fed me some, and the sticky, rummy, bittersweet cold taste melted in my mouth. He told me to close my eyes and savor the bite. After that, I couldn’t get enough of dessert.

He’d asked me again about the wedding, like it bothered him, and I finally said, “If you don’t want me going…I mean, I don’t need to go.” Maybe I could feint some illness, then I wouldn’t have to worry about my ex chasing me all over the backyard during the ceremony.

“No,” he said. “You should go. It’s important that you support your family in these matters. Perhaps you can even take someone with you for support.”

“Yeah. Sheri agreed to go with me, be my pseudo-date.” I’d told him about Sheri, my BFF.

He didn’t say anything about that, but a thought occurred to me. I wondered if I had offended him? Had he expected me to ask him? But that was ridiculous. What interest would a retired billionaire like Alexei Karenina have in visiting Bumfuck, U.S.A.?

He was still very grim when we arrived at his house. I got out and walked him in, and that’s when he turned and asked if I wanted to stay the night. He said he would pay me overtime. It excited me, but at the same time saddened me, the formal way we had this arranged.

“Would that be all right with Maria?” I asked.

Mr. Karenina smirked. “Last time I checked, I owned this house, not her.

Upstairs, in the master bedroom, he dropped his suit jacket on the floor, walked to me, seized my chin, and pulled it upward.
