Chapter 6

HELPING NORA

Her eyes were all red. “What do you think?” she asked.

“Um, I guess not,” Mike said. What was she doing here? “You were one of the funky chickens?”

“I was,” she said. “But I am never, ever doing that again! I’m dropping out of the show, and now Ellie and Ana are mad.”

Mike was so confused. “Wait a minute,” he said. “I thought you didn’t want to be in the show!”

Nora blew her nose. “I didn’t,” she replied. “I don’t! But Ellie and Ana asked me, and I thought it might be easier if nobody knew who I was. I think it was even worse! It’s scary enough to get up onstage in front of everyone. It’s more scary to do it in a stupid costume.”

Mike agreed. “Yeah,” he said. “It is a pretty stupid costume.”

Would he ever learn to think before he opened his big mouth?

But Nora thought it was funny. Actually, she laughed until her eyes teared up again. “Did you see the sequins on the mask?” she giggled. “And the feathers are already coming off this boa.… I’m shedding!”

Any minute now, Mike’s mom would be here. “Do you want a ride home?” he asked Nora. Maybe things were back to normal.

She said, “My dad is on his way.”

“My mom can call him,” Mike told her. “Come on!” After his performance, he still felt like flying. He’d do the chicken dance all the way to the parking lot if it would cheer Nora up. His happiness was contagious!

Of course Mike’s mom was thrilled to drive Nora home. Before he knew it, they were talking about some new book and he was left out of the conversation. Why couldn’t they ever talk about something he’d actually read? Guinness Book of World Records, maybe?

So, Mike ran through the act in his mind again. He and Adam still had a lot to work on. But if it went well today, it would be even better on Friday night! He could practically hear the applause already.

Then he thought about Nora’s situation. Should she call her friends to talk it over? he wondered.

And then he thought about his act and Nora’s situation at the same time.

Until last week, Nora had been his partner in magic.

And she was afraid to be onstage?

Why hadn’t she told him that before?

Nora could never be his assistant if she was a scaredy-cat!

Mike and Adam would make the perfect team for the talent show. But what would happen after the show? Mike couldn’t leave Nora out of his act forever. She knew all his secrets!

An idea came to Mike as quickly as state capitals came to Nora.

She had helped him tons of times before … now he had to help her. He had to convince her to be in the show! Then she’d get over her stage fright once and for all. He’d be a good friend, and she’d be a better partner than ever!

They were getting their backpacks out of the trunk when Mike announced, “I think you should come up with a new act.
