Mae spent the next several days working with Copper both morning and evening. The upcoming event was no longer just a normal driving engagement. If it was, she would have taken Steel.
The Arts Fair at Riverfront Park was now part of an actual police operation intended to catch some jewel thieves.
Three days before the Fair, Mae stood in the barn aisle with Copper and prepared to drive him yet again.
âYou donât have to do this, Mae,â Ross said. âI know I told you it would be good to help, but at the end of the day, itâs the job of the police to catch criminals. Not yours.â
âI know,â she said, tightening the girth on Copperâs harness. âI keep telling myself these people canât be that dangerous if all they did was steal a ring.â
âBut you can take one look and know theyâre anything but harmless.â
She nodded. âI canât explain it, but yeah, I got a bad feeling about them from the start. I guess I told myself that Iâm going to meet all kinds in a business like this one . . . but these people were pretty unsavory.â
âThey proved you were right at that street fair.â
Mae took a deep breath. âYeah, they sure did. I donât think theyâd hesitate to âaccidentallyâ drive over a person, or even a horse, if thatâs what it took to retrieve their stolen loot and save their own hides.â
Ross walked to the tack room and then handed Mae the bridle. âThe police think the crooks want you to use the same horse and carriage so they can find you.â
âBut I think we know the real reason.â She glanced at him as she settled the heavy bridle on Copperâs big head. âTheyâve seen Copper spook on two occasions. They plan to do it again, because now they know just how to do it.â
âThatâs right. Cause a diversion so they can get away with their ring. Just like two of them got away at that other event, in front of a crowd that was looking right at them.â
Ross ran his hand down Copperâs long flaxen mane. âYou sure you want to take him? Just say he went lame and you had to take Steel instead.â
âOh, I thought of that, but the police said that if I was going to help with this operation, Iâd have to take the same horse or else the crooks would disappear on them again.â
âA different horse might not fit their plan.â
âYup. Thatâs what I thought, too.â
âMaybe you could use a different Belgian.â
Mae looked up. âA different, what?â
âBelgian. Find one thatâs used to street driving and cars and scooters. Most of them have Copperâs same coloring and markings. They tend to look similar. I donât think those city crooks would ever know the difference.â
âWell, that might be an idea. Do you know of a Belgian horse I could use? One that would be all right driving downtown and looks enough like Copper? He is pretty tall and a dark red. Plus, heâs got a long tail for a draft horse.
