I kept my head pulled in all the next week. On Friday I nipped in to Burt’s Milk Bar to check out the jukebox, maybe flog some coupons. The coin box was nearly full, but among the sixpences was a disappointingly large number of slugs. I didn’t hang about any longer than I had to, and as soon as I’d unloaded a few quid’s worth of coupons, I took off. On my way out the door, the girl behind the counter called me over.

She leaned close so that no one would overhear. “A chap was in here asking about you a little while ago.”

“Oh yeah? Anyone you know?”

She looked around, then said very quietly, “No, but I can tell you that he didn’t have a Cornel Wilde haircut, he wasn’t wearing jeans, and he wasn’t jiving to ‘The Devil’s Jump.’”

“A government man?”

“I don’t know. He was sort of unusual, if you know what I mean.”

“A rough sort of cove?” I said.

She smiled, shook her head. “Oh, no. He had lovely manners.”

“What did he want?”

“Well, he seemed to know that you usually pop by here of a Friday—”

“Christ, how did he know that?”

“I don’t know. But he said if was to see you today, could I give you a message.”

“What was it?”

“He said he’d be at Toohey’s house, and that he wanted ever so much to have a little chat with you.”

“Did he tell you his name?”

She shook her head.
