(Motherfucking Story Time.)

I wasn't always a demon. None of us were. Except maybe Lucifer. Who the fuck knows with him. He's been in Hell for forever. He's the boss, the man in charge, and he's completely fucking inept most of the time, which is what a lot of bosses are, so I guess it works?

Anyways, screw that. This isn't about him.

In my old life, before I got sent to these hellish pits, I was...

I mean, I ran a foster home for unadoptable kids. By unadoptable, I don't even mean there was anything wrong with them. There wasn't. They were just too old, too wild, too something, and after a certain point the odds of a kid being adopted by anyone becomes slim to none, so I took them in.

I wasn't rich or anything. I did what I could, tried my best, and somehow made it work. I took up odd jobs when I could, helped the kids learn life skills, played the grumpy doting dad when needed, and otherwise just made sure they didn't accidentally kill themselves or something. Seriously, why the fuck do kids want to jump off the roof, run into the street, and turn the stove up to max after tossing in a pan of cookies only to forget they're there and then nearly burn the entire goddamn house down?

No fucking clue, but it's annoying as hell and all of those things happened at one point or another, but I managed to keep us all safe, fed, and mostly in one piece, save for the occasional broken arm or whatever.

"Dan~!" Cindy screeched at me, this little nine-year-old brat with the blondest hair you've ever seen. "My knee~!"

"Cindy," I said, shaking my head at her. "Seriously, you need to stop jumping down the stairs. You can't fly. You're not a superhero."

"I wore a cape, though. Freddy said if I held it when I jumped it would be like a parachute, and--"

"Freddy's a little fucking--"

"Huh?"

"I'm going to have a calm and polite talk with Freddy about what a goddamn idiot he is," I said instead. Is that better? Probably not? Whatever. Leave me the fuck alone.

"Can I still be a superhero, though?"

"No."

"But you are."

"Kid."

"Huh?"

"Thanks. But don't jump down the stairs again, even if you have a cape on. Let me get the emergency kit and I'll patch that knee up. You want a cookie with your bandaid?"

"Yes, please!"

So, yeah, that was my life for... for a long time. I saw kids grow up, move out, find love, go to college, get decent jobs. I was lucky in that I thankfully never had to deal with the darker side of foster care, either. I didn't ever have to deal with drug addiction or alcoholics or... or any of it. Everyone of the kids I looked after turned out alright. It was nice. More than nice. We had annual reunions, the ones who had already left coming back to spend Christmas with the ones who were still there, the new ones, all of them.
