Lisa grinned when she entered Natty’s place. Stefon had mentioned he suspected Natty knew about them, and she was looking forward to the conversation. He sat on the sofa, a bottle of water within reach on the coffee table, his hair a little longer and not quite as sharp as Lisa was used to. His facial hair had also grown out a little, leaving an even five o’clock shadow across his face. He wore a plain white t-shirt and black jeans.

Lisa’s eyes surveyed Natty, taking in the unfamiliar image. It was different to what she was used to, but she liked it. It gave him a rugged, dangerous edge.

‘How are you doing?’ she asked, standing in the doorway.

‘You can sit down if you like,’ Natty said. ‘I’m not going to bite you.’

‘What if I want you to?’ Lisa teased, placing her pinky finger on her bottom lip. Natty stared straight ahead, not noticing the gesture.

‘I don’t think Stef would like that.’

‘Oh . . .’ Lisa smirked. ‘Is that what this is about? You want to interrogate me about your cousin?’

Natty shook his head. ‘I’m curious, don’t get me wrong. You both know what you’re doing, though. In fact, you might even be good for each other.’

Lisa shook her head now. ‘We’re just having fun.’ She surveyed Natty, wondering if he was being honest. ‘Are you seriously telling me you’re not bothered?’

‘I didn’t say that. But, truthfully, no. I felt a bit weird about it at first, but that annoyed me more than finding out what you two were up to. I had no right to feel like that. I’m with Lorraine,’ Natty said.

‘Why did you feel weird?’ Lisa finally moved to sit down. She picked up the bottle of water, taking a long sip as she waited for his reply. Despite himself, Natty smiled.

‘I don’t know. At first, I was worried it was jealousy.’

‘At first?’ Lisa pressed.

Natty nodded. ‘As I said, I have a girl, Lisa. I love her. That might sound weird to you or whatever, but it’s the truth, and I already got far closer to you than I should have, and that fucked things up for me.’

‘You’re talking about what happened at the safe house?’ Lisa tapped the knuckles on her left hand, still smirking.

‘I’m talking about all of it. I shouldn’t have kissed you. Shouldn’t have flirted and played along, but I did, and I have to live with that shit. Lo and me are barely clicking, so you got what you wanted. But you moving onto Stefon is good for me. Despite what I felt when I first found out, I think it’ll help her realise we were never a thing.’

Lisa’s smirk faded. ‘I told you. We’re just having fun. Besides, it’s not my fault that your girl’s insecure.’

Natty avoided the obvious attempt to bait him.

‘I can’t really blame her. Before she gave me a chance, I was a bit of a dog. I got around, and I slept with my fair share of women.
