âYes, Iâm calling to speak with a Margaret Andersonâis she available?â Olivia spoke dejectedly into the phone, trying not to stare at Lawrenceâs empty desk. Lydiaâs sister still had the maiden name Anderson, something Olivia had made note of before calling. She offhandedly pressed ârecordâ on the machine just in case Lawrence wanted to listen in after he got back from his drive.
âIâm Margaret Anderson,â the caller responded.
âBrilliant. Miss Anderson, my name is Olivia Austin; Iâm with the Devon and Cornwall Police.â
The woman cleared her throat.
âOh yes; Lydia said youâd be calling,â Margaret responded. âAnd please, Margaret is fine.â
âAll right, well Margaret, I know youâve heard by now that your sisterâs husband, Simon Fisher, has passed away. You should know that this call is being recorded, by the way,â Olivia added.
âThatâs quite okay, Iâve got nothing to hide,â she answered. âAnd yes, I heard the bastard had a meetup with the ground from his flat yesterday morning.â
Olivia was a little shocked by the rage in her voice.
âYou didnât like him, then?â Olivia asked, pressing further.
âWell, Lydia felt the need to leave, didnât she? Thatâs enough of a reason for me,â Margaret replied with a hint of sarcasm.
âThatâs fair. Did you know Simon well?â Olivia enquired. She knew that the main purpose of this call was to get verification of Lydiaâs alibi, but it felt like too good of an opportunity to give up.
âNot terribly, no,â Margaret answered cautiously. âBack when he and Lydia were still together, theyâd have me over for supper every now and again. He was fine up until he wasnât, in my book.â
Her voice had a certain caustic quality about it; Olivia found it oddly comforting. At least she wasnât the only one with a bitter attitude towards the world.
âI see,â Olivia mused, biting her bottom lip. âAnd do you know why your sister left Mr. Fisher?â
Margaret scoffed on the other end.
âLydiaâs about as closed off as they come,â she replied. âWhen she showed up to my doorstep, a sobbing mess, I was just grateful sheâd come to me and not run off to who knows where. So no, I didnât ask, and Lydia didnât bother telling me. All I know is that youâve got to be some sick bastard for someone as loyal as my sister to leave your sorry arse.â
The vitriol in Margaretâs voice was evident; she truly cared that her sister had been wronged.
âI understand, Miss Anderson,â Olivia replied calmly.
âDo you though? Margaret asked. âDo you have a sister, detective?â
It caught Olivia slightly off guard. She wasnât expecting to be interviewed in kind.
âI do,â Olivia replied after a moment. Images of Millsâ pink hair and wide smile flashed behind her eyes. Camilla was the epitome of a free spirit; how had it been that she was the one settled down with a child and husband while Olivia lived like a spinster in her cottage? She supposed it was foolish to ponder such questions. Life, after all, always had a funny way of happening.
âDo you love her to death, detective?â Margaretâs tone had become grave, interrupting her thoughts.
