By now the children were tired out by their adventure and flopped down on the grass.

The evening sun sank beneath the horizon, picking out the far-off mountains in blue and purple. The sky grew golden in the west, with flecks of red light.

Clare looked at it with pleasure. ‘That’s where we’re going tomorrow,’ she said. ‘To the west, to meet the Princess Deirdre. Perhaps we might get home after all.’

The setting sun caught the remaining flecks of cloud and tinged them with gold. The far-off sky shone with a glowing yellow colour.

Gavin tugged excitedly at Clare’s arm. ‘Clare!’ he said. ‘That’s where we’re going, to “the golden wall of the west”. Well, there’s the golden wall – the land of the setting sun. So, we’ve found another of our tasks from the prophecy.’

Clare stared at the sky. ‘I think you’re right,’ she said thoughtfully. Michael and Mot nodded agreement and they all gazed with growing excitement at the late evening sky as the yellow light shone and then began to fade.

‘Let’s sleep now,’ said Clare. ‘We have a long way to go when the new day starts.’
